What tint can (and can't) fix

Brow tint is a colour treatment. It works brilliantly on brows that already have the shape and density you want, it just enhances what's there. Where it runs out of road is sparse patches, over-plucked brows that never quite grew back, or naturally fine or fair hair that dye alone can't disguise. No amount of colour adds hair that isn't there.

Powder brows work differently. Instead of colouring existing hair, tiny deposits of pigment are placed just beneath the skin in a soft, powdery finish, filling gaps, defining shape, and giving you brows that look the same whether you've just woken up, been swimming, or finished a twelve-hour shift. It's semi-permanent, not permanent, so it fades gradually over one to three years rather than being a forever decision.

The real cost, over three years

Brow tint at Lash It Up is £12 a session. Most people rebook every four to six weeks to keep the colour looking fresh, which works out at roughly £310 to £470 over three years.

Powder brows, cost by stage £200 for the first session, then an £80 perfecting session 4–6 weeks later (this isn't an upsell, it's how the pigment settles as it heals, and every client has it). After that, a £150 top-up roughly once a year keeps the colour crisp. Over three years that's typically two to three top-ups, putting the total between £580 and £730.

So the headline numbers are £310–£470 for tint over three years, against £580–£730 for powder brows. Here's what that actually means.

So is it actually cheaper? Not quite, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Over three years, powder brows usually costs somewhere between £110 and £260 more than keeping up with tint, which works out at roughly £3 to £7 extra a month. What that difference buys you: three years without a single morning spent filling in your brows, and a shape that survives the gym, the beach and a bad night's sleep. If the daily faff bothers you more than the extra pound or two a week, that's the trade worth thinking about.

What you're actually paying the difference for

  • Sweat, water and humidity proof. Tint doesn't budge under normal wear, but a heavy workout, a swim or a hot summer can take the edge off it faster than you'd expect. Powder brows doesn't move.
  • No pencil most mornings. Tint enhances your natural shape, so plenty of people still fill in a gap or two by hand. Powder brows generally removes that step entirely.
  • Fixes what tint can't. Sparse patches, over-plucked brows, fine or fair hair, all things tint can only work around, not solve.

Is powder brows painful compared to a tint?

Tinting is completely painless. Powder brows involves a numbing cream first, so most clients describe it as mild scratching rather than pain. It's a longer appointment, around two hours for the first session, but not an uncomfortable one.

How long does each actually last?

Brow tint typically lasts four to six weeks before it needs redoing. Powder brows lasts one to three years, with a yearly top-up to keep the colour looking its best.

Can I still get a tint if I have powder brows?

Yes. Some clients tint their brow hair on top of powder brows for extra depth, particularly if their natural hair is very fair. It's not necessary, but it's an option.

Is powder brows worth it if my brows are already in good shape?
