Brows have been having a moment for the last decade, and the semi-permanent makeup options available now are genuinely impressive. But choosing between powder brows and microblading can feel confusing when both promise effortless results that last for years. So which one actually delivers?

Here's an honest, no-fluff comparison from our PhiAcademy-certified powder brows specialist in Enfield.

The short answer

Powder brows are the more durable, more universally flattering option for most clients in 2026. They last longer, work on more skin types, and fade more predictably. Microblading can look beautifully natural in the right hands but it has serious limitations. particularly on oily or combination skin.

It's the main reason we only offer powder brows at Lash It Up. We'll explain exactly why.

What is microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup technique that uses a manual hand-held tool with a row of tiny needles to deposit pigment into the upper layer of the skin in fine, hair-like strokes. The result, when first done, mimics individual brow hairs.

Microblading became hugely popular in the 2010s. It typically lasts 12 to 18 months, sometimes less on oily skin, before a top-up is needed.

What are powder brows?

Powder brows (also called ombré brows or shaded brows) are a semi-permanent makeup technique that uses a digital machine with a very fine needle to deposit thousands of tiny dots of pigment into the skin. The effect is a soft, powdered gradient, like beautifully filled-in brows with a brow pencil or pomade.

Powder brows typically last 2 to 3 years before a colour boost is needed, and they suit all skin types. including oily, combination and mature skin.

Why we specialise in powder brows After years of doing both techniques, we made the call to specialise in powder brows. The reason: clients with microblading routinely came back disappointed at the 12-month mark with patchy fading, while our powder brows clients were still loving their brows 2–3 years later. Specialising lets us deliver consistently brilliant results.

Powder brows vs microblading: side-by-side

How long they last

Powder brows: 2–3 years. Microblading: 12–18 months. The gap is partly because powder brow pigment is deposited more evenly throughout the brow, so as it fades it stays cohesive. Microblading strokes can fade unevenly.

How they look

Powder brows look like beautifully made-up brows, a soft, even, made-with-makeup finish. Microblading looks like real hair strokes when freshly done. Powder brows are arguably more on-trend in 2026 as the soft "fluffy brow" look continues to dominate. Microblading still has fans who want maximum realism on close inspection.

Suitability for different skin types

This is the big one. Powder brows suit virtually all skin types, dry, normal, combination, oily and mature skin. Microblading is really only suitable for dry skin. On oily skin, the hair strokes blur together within months and lose definition, sometimes ending up looking blotchy or grey-blue. If you have oily or combination skin (most of us do, even partially), powder brows are the safer choice.

The healed result

Both look stunning when freshly done. The real test is how they look 6 months in. Powder brows tend to soften beautifully and just look like naturally fuller, polished brows. Microblading on the wrong skin type can blur, fade patchily, or, in worst cases, turn grey or blue as the body breaks down the pigment.

Pain and discomfort

Honestly, both are similar. We use a topical numbing cream before treatment, and most clients describe the sensation as a mild scratching or stinging. Powder brows can feel slightly less sharp because the machine deposits dots rather than cutting strokes, but neither is painful enough to put most people off.

Healing and downtime

Both treatments require around 7–10 days of healing, during which the brows will look darker and then lightly scab and shed. After healing, the colour softens to its true tone. There's no real downtime. You can go to work, just no swimming, sweating heavily, or rubbing the brows for the first 10 days.

Cost

At Lash It Up in Enfield, our powder brows are £200 for the first session and £100 for the perfecting touch-up 4–8 weeks later. Most clients then need a colour boost every 18–24 months at £150. Lifetime cost is significantly lower than microblading because top-ups are less frequent.

Suitable for mature skin

Powder brows are dramatically better for clients over 50, on thinner or more delicate skin. Microblading strokes can heal poorly on mature skin and blur quickly. Powder brows give a soft, flattering, "woke up like this" finish that works at any age.

Who is powder brows best for?

  • Oily, combination or normal skin. microblading simply doesn't hold well on these types
  • Clients over 35, when skin starts to thin and microblading strokes blur faster
  • Anyone who wants brows that last 2+ years before needing a top-up
  • Daily brow-makeup wearers who are ready to ditch the routine entirely
  • Anyone whose old microblading has faded patchy or grey. powder brows are the best camouflage
  • Clients who've done their research and prefer the soft "filled-in" look over fine hair strokes

Who might still prefer microblading?

  • Clients with very dry skin and minimal natural brow hair, who want the absolute most realistic hair-stroke effect
  • Clients who genuinely don't mind a 12–18 month commitment cycle and the maintenance involved

Important note: if you do choose microblading, find a specialist who has done thousands of procedures. The technique is genuinely difficult and skill gaps are huge.

Real talk from our salon The most common new SPMU appointment we get is someone whose microblading has faded poorly and they want it covered. Powder brows are the most effective camouflage technique for old microblading because the shading naturally absorbs and neutralises uneven pigment underneath.
