About Ponders End

A bit of local character

Ponders End grew from a scattered riverside hamlet into one of Enfield's busiest industrial districts, shaped by the Lee Navigation canal that brought industry and trade here in the 19th century. The area is now in the middle of a genuine transformation, and the 191 bus still connects it directly to Baker Street in ten minutes.

Historic landmarks

Wright's Flour Mill. Established in 1767 on the banks of the River Lee, this is the oldest working industrial building in the entire London Borough of Enfield. The mill has been grinding flour on the same site for over 250 years, and its 1925 concrete silos have become one of the most recognisable features on the Ponders End waterfront. Still in use today.

Durants Park. The park takes its name from Durants Arbour, a moated 16th-century manor house that once belonged to the Wroth family, a prominent Enfield dynasty. A short walk away, Ponders End Park and Memorial Garden marks the spot where the Two Brewers pub stood before it was destroyed in the Blitz. The bombing claimed several local lives, and the garden remains a quiet, well-kept memorial in a neighbourhood that has never quite forgotten what it lost.

Getting to us from Ponders End

The 191 bus runs direct from Ponders End High Street to Baker Street, Enfield in roughly ten minutes. By car via the A1010 it is a similar journey. Ponders End station on the Greater Anglia Hertford East branch connects to London Liverpool Street in seventeen minutes, making it one of the faster rail connections into the City from this part of Enfield.

Did you know?

The Ediswan electric lamp factory, known locally as The Lamp, was one of Ponders End's most famous landmarks for most of the 20th century. At its peak it employed thousands of local people and produced the light bulbs that lit homes across Britain. The factory is long gone, but its memory is being revived in the new Electric Quarter development on Ponders End High Street, a mixed-use scheme that deliberately celebrates the area's history of making things.
