A bit of local character
Potters Bar sits on the very northern edge of Greater London, where the suburbs thin out and you start to see real countryside. Until the 1960s it was a quiet farming village; today it is a busy commuter town with one of the most walkable high streets in Hertfordshire, easy A10 and M25 access to us in Enfield, and a slightly unexpected place in aviation history.
Historic landmarks
The Wyllyotts Centre. A 16th-century timber-framed farmhouse, now the town's main arts venue. The building survived a 17th-century rebuild, a Victorian conversion to a working farm, and a 1980s restoration that uncovered the original timber framing behind the brick facade. The attached museum tells the story of Potters Bar from medieval times forward.
Oakmere Park and the village pond. The green heart of the town and the focal point of the original village. Oakmere House on its eastern edge dates from 1715, and the duck pond beside it is fed by springs that have been documented in local records since the 14th century.
Getting to us from Potters Bar
The A1000 south takes you straight from Potters Bar through Hadley Wood into Enfield Town in around fifteen minutes by car. Alternatively, M25 junction 24 onto the A111 puts you on Baker Street in twelve minutes. Potters Bar station on the Thameslink line connects to Moorgate in twenty minutes, then a short hop on the Greater Anglia line to Enfield Town.
Did you know?
On the night of 2 September 1916, the German naval airship SL 11 was shot down in flames over Cuffley, just north of Potters Bar, by Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson of the Royal Flying Corps. It was the first airship downed over British soil, made Robinson a national hero overnight, and earned him the Victoria Cross. The crash site is now a quiet memorial.
