A bit of local character
Chase Side runs along the western edge of Enfield Town and takes its name from Enfield Chase, the medieval royal hunting forest that once covered most of this area. Today the road is lined with Georgian and Victorian houses, and Forty Hall Estate at its northern end is the showpiece. A 1632 Jacobean mansion still surrounded by the lakes and lanes that drew Crown commissioners here four hundred years ago.
Historic landmarks
Forty Hall Estate. Built in 1632 by Sir Nicholas Rainton, a Lord Mayor of London, this Jacobean mansion has barely been altered since the 17th century. The estate runs to 270 acres of parkland, formal gardens and farmland, and the house is now a free museum with rotating exhibitions on Enfield's history.
The Chase Side conservation area. The northern stretch of Chase Side is a designated conservation area, with a run of Georgian houses, the 1839 Trinity Methodist Church, and the New River. an engineered waterway dug in 1613 to supply London with fresh drinking water from Hertfordshire springs.

Chase Side runs parallel to Baker Street, so you are already on the right road. From the southern end near Enfield Town it is a five-minute walk to us; from the northern end near Forty Hall it is a five-minute drive. Enfield Chase station on the Great Northern line is a four-minute walk away.

Forty Hall's gardens hide the foundations of an entirely different building: Elsynge Palace, a Tudor royal residence where Henry VIII brought his three children — Edward, Mary and Elizabeth, who each became monarchs in turn — for summers in the country. Archaeologists rediscovered the palace foundations in 2004.
